Business Funding Opportunities in Devon and Somerset
According to the recent British Chamber of Commerce survey, we are fully entering a “cautious funding trend”, where both lenders and investors are further scaling back in the UK due to both political and financial uncertainty. The survey raised several interesting statistics:
- 65.3% of small businesses were profitable in 2022, but after the ‘post-Covid bounce’, this is under enormous pressure from supply chain inflation, staff and energy costs.
- Around half (49%) of businesses felt that getting funding had become more challenging over the past three years.
- Only 13% said it was getting easier.
Whilst accessing traditional funding is certainly a challenge for many, particularly with the cost-of-living crisis placing strain on supply chains and balance sheets, there are alternative funders in the region that can lend based on potential rather than collateral.
South West Investment Fund – £25k – £5m
The British Business Bank’s South West Investment Fund will deliver a £200 million commitment of new funding to smaller businesses. It aims to drive sustainable economic growth by supporting innovation and creating local opportunities for new and growing businesses across the South West.
Now that most SME lenders require a track record of profitability and/or are lending against EBITDAR performance (Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and restructuring or rent costs), the role of the South West Investment Fund has never been more important in providing finance to the region’s growth SMEs.
With a range of commercial finance options on offer, the Fund can provide loans from £25,000 to £2 million and equity investments up to £5 million.

While grants can significantly benefit your business, they can be hard to find. The application process is also not without its challenges. Understanding and overcoming these challenges can make the difference between a successful application and a missed opportunity.
